ASAM–GDI is a standard for the integration of arbitrary devices in application programs. By its use the access to the computer's periphery is unified.
The difficulty of each device's optimal communication is solved by the device producer (or OEM) by delivering the specific driver together with the device.
The ASAM–GDI concept guarantees the user the independence to the computer's operating system and to the interfaces which are relevant for the device communication. The modular structure joins better quality to cost reduction. ASAM–GDI behaves neutral to the actual technology. Adaptions to new operating systems or exchanged communication systems take place via a universally usable platform adapter.
